…..and then came Covid-19

…..and then came Covid-19

Haiti seemed to enter the Covid-19 pandemic, or rather the Covid-19 pandemic entered Haiti, a little later than other countries in the world, however, enter, it did. Limited resources for testing, many businesses ordered to shut down by the government, flight in and out of Haiti curtailed. The only thing we could do was to get educated about preventing the spread of Covid-19 and educate the people about good handwashing, wearing a mask, social distancing and staying home if one is sick. Pastor Casseus and his new wife, Emmanuella, did a lot of teaching for the people of Fowozoli at church and in the community. We were able to send funds to Haiti to have 200 masks made for the children and people at church. Pastor Casseus also set up handwashing stations for the children and taught to wash hands before eating, after using the bathroom and whenever dirty. All we can hope is that they are using them…so we keep educating and praying as the Covid-19 numbers are rising.

If The Shoe Fits

If The Shoe Fits

Sadly, when I visited Fowozoli School, many of the children had shoes that were tattered and falling apart or they were too small or too big. Thanks to many generous donors, we were able to send the funds for 50 pairs of socks and shoes. We hired the shoe salesman to fit the children with good quality shoes and socks. You can see how nice they look in the pictures.

Fowozoli Clinic in Haiti

Let There Be Light

Pastor Casseus’ Mother using her Solar Lantern

On my visit to Fowozoli Church of Christ we were able to provide each family with a solar lantern. These will save the families about $10 per month in the price of kerosene. It will also help the children be able to complete their school homework at home after dark.

Fowozoli Medical Clinic

Fowozoli Medical Clinic

February 2020, found Judy, secretary of Caring Hearts for Central Haiti, and Joanne, CEO, in Haiti working in the annual medical clinic for Hope for Haiti’s Children (like we have done for the past 9 and 8 years, respectively). Pictured are Judy, Joanne, Pastor Casseus who all met when the school children from Hinche came for their annual check-up. At the end of the week, Judy returned to the U.S. and I (Joanne) traveled to Hinche with Pastor Casseus to visit the congregation at the Fowozoli Church of Christ.

On Monday, we held a “mini” medical clinic which included height, weight, scoliosis check, vision test and dental screening. I also listened to heart and lungs to check for any heart murmurs that may need further attention. The kids did great! We identified 17 children who needed further vision examination. Pastor Casseus was able to make appointment for them at the local optometrist and 5 were further identified to need glasses. We were able to provide funds for those glasses.

2019 Financial Report

We were incorporated in May 2019, and received IRS 501(c)3 status as a non-profit organization. We started off very small, but about that time I was seeing pictures of the children at Fort-Resolut (Fowozoli in Haitian Creole), with orangish-colored hair (a sign of malnutrition), we had made a decision to start a school lunch program even if I had to pay for it myself. We prayed and within a few days of that prayer, I received a phone call from a man and his wife who gave a sizeable donation in memory of their son Steven. Our lunch program started on Thanksgiving Day!

We are still small and growing and would love some churches or larger organizations with whom we can partner for regular monthly donations…but…God knows what we need and when, so we have faith He will provide when we need it as He did for the School Lunch Program. You will notice we had very few administrative expenses. Although probably not sustainable in the long term, but right now the CEO of Caring Hearts for Central Haiti, Inc., pays all administrative expenses. As we grow, Lord willing, those expenses will become greater, but for right now, it’s manageable.
